From Pertini to the european cities: the travelling exhibition Values tells young people about discrimination

The inauguration of the traveling exhibition "Values: a Journey around Discrimination and EU Values" took place on Saturday 25th of March 2023 at 11 am at the Cultural Center "Il Pertini" in Cinisello Balsamo (Italy).

This is the outcome of the European project “Val.UE.s | Valorising Lives & Understanding European (hi)Stories”, funded by the European program CERV, with the aim of sensitizing the younger generations to the issue of discrimination, conducting a survey on the issue in totalitarian Europe and stimulating reflection on discrimination in nowadays. The Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo is a partner in the project together with the Sapienza Innovation Consortium (lead partner) and the Luigi Sturzo Institute of Rome, the Lorand Eotvos University of Budapest (Hungary), the University of Bucharest (Romania) and the University of Kaunas (Lithuania). The exhibition was curated by the European Projects Department of the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Photography of Milan and with the participation of fourth-year students from the G. Casiraghi High School in Cinisello Balsamo. At the end of the exhibition, Values will continue its journey in the other cities of the partnership: Rome, Budapest, Bucharest and Kaunas. For the occasion, the Cinisello Balsamo exhibition - that is in the dual language ITA/ENG - has been translated into the local language of all the partners.

The exhibition itinerary is made up of images, texts and extracts from video interviews collected from the various partner countries on the subject of discrimination, treated both from a historical and contemporary point of view. In fact, each partner interpreted the topic, now giving greater prominence to a historical-scientific reading of the selected images, now moving towards a more personal and subjective reading. To collect and select the materials on display, the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo involved a class of local high schools through PCTO-Paths for Soft Skills and Orientation. During three days of workshops organized with the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the students carried out group activities and conducted research on the themes of the project. The moments of reflection on historical discrimination and critical reading of the images were preparatory for the co-conduction of video interviews with people who have suffered discrimination of various kinds or are spokespersons for it. Once they got to the heart of the selection of images and video extracts intended for the exhibition, the students were guided through the processes of curation, communication and guided tours.
A path that allowed the youngsters not only to understand the power of images, but also to approach the complex theme of differences, inequalities and intolerances, and understand the founding values of democratic culture.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Travelling exhibition, the Municipality also provided an excerpt of some video interviews made by all partners. The video was avalilable on a tv screem during the exhibition and on the website: www.valuesproject.eu/european-hi-stories/presentation.
All video interviews are available on: www.valuesproject.eu/european-hi-stories.
