The Youth Committee for the Environment was created through the European project ‘’Youth Participation in Creating Resilient Cities - Town Twinning between Turkey and EU‘’.
The collaboration with Legambiente Cinisello Balsamo allowed the protagonists, the students of the Liceo Casiraghi of Cinisello Balsamo, to elaborate various proposals related to environmental sustainability.
The project was structured in 5 meetings, the last of which was dedicated to the presentation of the young people’s proposals to the mayor.
After the first introductory meeting on 5 March (see here), the young people in the following meetings were divided into four working groups and each worked on a thematic area according to their main interest in sustainability.
The topics were: waste separation, green areas and murals, environmental education and mobility.
The groups first discussed what they were most concerned about or wanted to change and then had questions that were included in a questionnaire common to all groups and shared with citizens of Cinisello Balsamo.
The questionnaire was a fundamental tool, it received around 300 answers and thanks to these, after analysing the data collected, the young people began to formulate proposals to try to improve climate change.
Two ideas for separate waste collection were proposed: the first concerned the collection of large waste and the second focused on the creation of a simple and understandable document explaining separate waste collection.
The proposal regarding green areas and murals involved promoting more green areas in cities and creating anti-smog murals on busy streets. In addition, the students recommended organising park tours for companies and schools to raise awareness of environmental education. Finally, the creation of safer bicycle lanes led to a vote in favour by all students during the vote, which took place at the end of this meeting.
The proposals were finally presented to the Mayor of Cinisello Balsamo, who welcomed them with great pleasure.
