It’s been almost three months since Dylan left to volunteer in Estonia and here’s how he’s doing:
I experienced a very different autumn from Italy, especially for the much colder temperatures.
In October I had a great experience in Tartu, elected as the Capital of Culture in 2024, to do an interesting training for all the volunteers who serve here in Estonia.
I had the pleasure of meeting many other people and had the opportunity to learn more about the traditions and culture of this remote country in northern Europe, and also learned about our role as volunteers in society and how we could learn something more for ourselves.
Time in Estonia passes so fast as the days start to get shorter and shorter, we celebrated halloween at kindergarten with a masquerade party and had a lot of fun. But the party did not end here because, a few days after halloween, in Estonia celebrate two festivals Kadripaev on November 25 and Mardipaev on 10 November similar to our halloween, Children dress up and go from house to house singing traditional songs in exchange for sweets.
These traditions are rooted in rural Estonian culture and represent a way of keeping old traditions alive.
In addition, my parents came to visit me in mid-November for a small one-week vacation, we visited the city of Tallinn, the museums, we went to visit the island of Saaremaa the largest island in Estonia and I had the opportunity to make them visit the kindergarten where I work and introduce my friends and colleagues.
But, as I knew, as soon as my parents came it started to snow very hard, I did not expect so much snow in a short time that changes the atmosphere of Tallinn into a Christmas air with its market and Christmas tree in the center of the city.
Beginning of December with the kindergarten we prepare for Christmas, we went to a church near to sing all the Estonian Christmas songs and the most famous ones, it was a really nice moment, all together singing, playing with snow and eating typical Christmas specialties I will never forget.
But now the real winter is coming slowly with so much cold and as dark, and I can not wait for it to come…
